[ Whenever Lance thinks to check his phone this morning, there is quite the backlog of messages waiting... ]

[When Lance does wake up, it's because of the repeated buzzing from his phone vibrating every couple of minutes, so Boa's attempts aren't totally in vain. Still, he's tired as hell because he didn't get much sleep and his movements are sluggish at best. He fumbles for his phone, hits the wrong button on the touch screen at least twice and then he finally sees that backlog of messages.

Suddenly he's a whole lot less tired.]

SORRY. I'm fine. I'm sorry.

[ The relief that floods Boa at that simple message is almost embarrassing. Of course he had tried to tell himself that a murder in their current situation is entirely unlikely and would never happen, but another part of him remembers how out of control they all were when they killed. How Ren hit the final stone against his own head, not master of his own body.

Remembering made him afraid and no rationality could truly soothe him. ]

Where are you

I'm heading back now.

[That's not an answer to the question, but it's just not a question that he really wants to tackle right this second. He also knows Boa's not really going to let him get away with a dodge, but he has to try that first.

Within the next minute or so, Lance opens the door to their apartment as stated, but there's an unusual amount of furtiveness to his behavior. Usually he'd be swinging the door all the way open and being generally loud or obvious about his general existence, but he seems to be putting in active effort not to be loud this morning. Perhaps he really is just that tired.]

[ Lance will find Boa scowling at him when he returns. Of course, technically Boa knows that Lance can go wherever he wants and doesn't owe them any explanations... but would it really be too much to ask to just receive a warning beforehand, after all they went through with morning disappearances?

Lance's demeanor gives Boa pause though. He's truly apologetic then...? Or....? ]

... are you okay?

[It's not that surprising to see Boa hanging out in the common space, even less surprising to see that he's glaring, but it still gets him to grimace before he closes the door behind him.]

Yep, just peachy. How about you?

[finalguard]

[ Angry. Angry at Lance for staying out so long and angry at himself for being such a fool to get this worked up over it.

But really, Boa doesn't want to talk about that, so he just flat out ignores the question. ]

What happened?

[...that was also predictable. Of course Boa wasn't going to let it go. There's a moment of hesitation where Lance glances quickly in the direction of Nine's room, then focuses back down at Boa.]

..do we have to talk about it right now? I'm kinda tired. Did you eat?

[ Boa just stares Lance down. ]

I did. Did you?

[ Wherever you were. Something clearly happened there. Judging by the fact that no excessive apologies for making him worry are coming in, Boa is very sure that this is not at all the reason for Lance's mood. ]

If not, we can talk over your breakfast.

[...and now they're in a weird staring contest. Lance rubs the back of his head awkwardly, trying to defuse the tension with a bit of a laugh.]

I was just gonna eat some toast in my room though....

And that's an obstacle because...?

[ Lance he has been to your room before........ That's no forbidden zone. ]

[...god. Boa is so persistent about this that he just rubs his face.]

Because I said so?

[Lance slinks off towards the kitchen to grab the entire package of sliced bread and a glass of water. Then as he makes his way back towards his room, he pauses to face Boa again.]

Okay fine, come in.

[ Nine has been thinking for a while, but between missions, Ren, and whatever is happening with Tal, he's been pretty distracted. But the last mission has him thinking about it again. So here he is looking around the apartment for the Leggy Bean.

Checking the living room, kitchen, and his room until he finds him. ]

[Lance isn't too hard to find, especially since he's in the middle of playing Robot Unicorn Attack and isn't being particularly quiet about the fact that he's losing.]

Oh c'mon! That came out of nowhere, how was I supposed to dodge that?! No-- huh?

[He turns to look over his shoulder when the door opens and Nine peeks inside.]

Did you need something?

[linearcrash]

[ Rubbing the back of his head as he walks in. ]

What the hell are you even playing?

[ Despite the language, there isn't any actual bite in his words. Just Nine sounding normal. He does look over Lance's arm. ]

Figured we had some stuff to talk about, yo.

[ Also wants to check on that arm but... you know ]

[Still sulking very slightly from crashing that unicorn one too many times, he turns the laptop screen towards Nine. Likewise, it's pretty easy to tell there;s no actual animosity towards Nine in any of this.]

Robot Unicorn Attack? It's some flash game that was apparently super popular a few years ago. You should try it, it's kinda fun. Plus that song's gonna be stuck in my head for weeks now.

[As for what it is that Nine wants to talk about, he thinks he has a fairly good idea about what it is, but he dreads the conversation anyway. Even if he acknowledges that he's probably thoroughly earned a lecture or three.]

Here, you can have this chair. I'll sit on the bed. You wanted to talk about me putting Boa at risk, right?

[ That song is going to be stuck in his head for days... Thanks Lance

He comes closer to squint at the screen. ]

Never heard of it, yo.

[ Nine hasn't explored gaming options outside of consoles or his phone. At the part about Boa though, he'll look surprised. ]

Huh? Why would I talk to you about putting him at risk?

...huh?

[Lance pauses mid-step, now thoroughly confused as to what this is actually about.]

I dunno, I guess... [Almost sheepishly he sits down on the edge of his bed and looks down at his feet.] ... I've just been doing some thinking about the mission with Stan and how much of a close call it was. Boa could've gotten pretty badly hurt. I figured you might be mad about that.

[ He turns the chair backwards because what is sitting in anything normal. Then he'll sit, wresting his arms across the back of it. ]

Hey, Boa knows what he's getting into with these missions. Besides, I knew you would do whatever the hell it'll take to keep him and Lil safe. Why do you think I didn't rush back with Mitsuru?

[ There was also the whole... he didn't want to leave Ren there. But he knew things would be okay... or him and Mitsuru would have let a lot of SCPs out in retaliation. ]

[On some level, it's strangely sweet that Nine is trying. Despite it being a liiiittle disturbing, it does get Lance to smile just a little.]

... because Mitsuru alone can carry a team and Ren can't?

[Look, he saw what happened that time Ren showed up on the other side with the metaverse, ok?? But he's quick to add after a beat:]

No offense to Ren or anything. I can't talk.... and I owe him a huge favor. [He rubs his left arm, then pulls his shirt sleeve down a little further to cover up the scar a bit better.]

You really haven't see Ren fight, have you? He might look soft as hell, but he's pretty badass.

[ There's a grin there when he says that. He's pretty proud of the bae.

Nine sees the movement and tilts his head. ]

You should show it off. I mean, don't chicks dig those kinds of scars?

It's less the fighting and more the... [Actually you know what? They're not play bickering right now and that's probably a good thing, so Lance is just going to quit while he's ahead on this topic. Especially since Ren is obviously a good guy.] ... never mind. I'll take your word for it.

[He smiles.]

I dunno, I'm not used to looking at it yet. It just looks like a nasty skin blemish to me, heh.

[ Some other time, he would take that a win. But it's not even going to register as one at the moment. ]

You'll get used to it. I mean with this line of work, scars are bound to happen.

[ Says the dude with one right on his face.

But... he really should get on topic. ]

I wanted to talk about Tal.

[Lance had his mouth open to reply to that first part, but the instant Nine brings up Tal, he cringes and guiltily looks down at his feet again. So that's what this whole thing was about, huh...]

...oh.

[It really isn't in Lance's nature to stay quiet. Heck, he has half a mind right to blanketly insist it's not like that, but lets the instinct sink back into the pit of his stomach and looks back up at Nine.]
